Zim - A Desktop Wiki Home Zim is a graphical text editor used to maintain a collection of wiki pages. Each page can contain links to other pages, simple formatting and images. Pages are stored in a folder structure, like in an outliner, and can have attachments. Creating a new page is as easy as linking to a nonexistent page. All data is stored in plain text files with wiki formatting. Various plugins provide additional functionality, like a task list manager, an equation editor, a tray icon, and support for version control. Zim can be used to: • Keep an archive of notes • Take notes during meetings or lectures • Organize task lists • Draft blog entries and emails • Do brainstorming Zim handles several types of markup, like headings, bullet lists and of course bold, italic and highlighted. This markup is saved as wiki text so you can easily edit it with other editors. Because of the autosave feature you can switch between pages and follow links while editing without worries. Although zim now exists for over 3 years there is no '1.0' version yet. This does not mean that the application is particularly un-stable (although making backups is always good practice) or only usable for linux gurus. But it does mean that the feature set is not yet complete (of course everything described in the manual is implemented). This website was written in Zim!

We’re all well aware about the capabilities of the Android platform. There are smartphones today that can compete with a wide range of technologies. However, what makes those devices really tick is the core Android platform. But what if you own an iPhone and still want to try out Android? Well, you no longer have to purchase an expensive (or inexpensive) phone to find out. There are emulators today that can help you run Android on your Mac or Windows PC. These bring full compatibility with all the features of Android, while some even update their emulators with the latest version of Android. With these emulators, you can run apps, games, and do pretty much anything that an Android device can (barring phone calls, obviously). So we’re going to talk a bit about some of the most popular emulators out there. While some user friendly emulators are present here, we’re also going to talk about developer emulators that can help test out apps and games. So let’s get to it. 5 Best Android Emulator For Mac KO Player is a relatively new entrant in the emulators game. It markets itself as a mid-market emulator that can run apps and games comfortably. While the focus is mainly on games, this is a full blown Android emulator, so it can run pretty much any app on the Play Store as long as it is compatible with the Android version. The company’s website doesn’t mention which version of Android it’s running, but talks about a few popular apps that are compatible with KO Player (WhatsApp, Clash of Clans etc). It also comes with features like gameplay recording, keyboard gameplay support, and comes with the Google Play Store pre-installed. It is said that about 99% of the Play Store apps are compatible with KO Player. The best part here is that KO Player is a free download, and can be snatched up directly from their official site. As with any free offering, expect some minor issues during usage. The Apple File System further safeguards your data with built-in support for encryption, crash-safe protections, and simplified data backup on the go. Built-in Apps Apps as powerful and elegant as your Mac. It's good for you and the planet. 9 Best Font Manager Apps for Mac, Windows, Linux and Online (2018) by Johnny. The macOS operating system has its own font management software, Font Book, installed by default. Perhaps the best font manager for Mac, for most people, is also a free font manager. You have a Mac, or maybe you're responsible for taking care of them at your business. You need an toolkit of apps that help you get out of trouble when your Mac's not working right. Maybe a hard drive needs rebuilding or recovery, the memory needs testing, you're desperate to un-delete files, you need to access to deeper system maintenance, or you simply want to better clean out the debris from old apps, there are several tools you can go to. These are my pick for the, and most indispensable tools, you can have. When it comes to rebuilding and recovering a hard drive that's not working right, Alsoft's DiskWarrior is peerless in the Mac realm. I don't know a single Mac IT professional worth their salt who doesn't swear by DiskWarrior, because it just works. DiskWarrior excels at rebuilding the directory structure of your Mac's hard drive, and it does so by building a replacement directory instead of trying to patch the existing one. It's a data scavenger, and it's really excellent at its job. Sometimes I've even had success getting data off of physically failing hard drives using DiskWarrior. • $99.95 - Techtool Pro 7. Micromat's Techtool Pro 7 isn't just about recovering files off your hard drive, though it can do that. It can also do a thorough test on your Mac's memory modules to see if there are any RAM hardware failures (they do happen), along with things like Techtool Protection, which can more easily recover files that have been thrown in the trash, and eDrive, which lets you create an extra startup partition on your Mac's hard drive (handy for diagnostic maintenance work). Volume cloning, file and disk optimization (defragmenting), network monitoring and more. It took until the 7.0.2 update before Techtool Pro 7 started support Macs with Fusion drives installed, but now that it does I feel a bit more comfortable about recommending it as a good option for Mac mavens looking for Mac diagnosis and drive repair software. • $99.99 - Data Rescue 3. Prosoft's Data Rescue 3 is another disk recovery tool. I've had good luck with it recovering deleted files from my Mac's internal hard drive and external volumes. It doesn't write to the hard drive; it requires an external drive to restore files to. The FileIQ feature is particularly handy if there's an obscure file type you want to recover. Provide Data Rescue 3 with an intact sample of the data you're looking to recover, and it'll sniff it out like a bloodhound. Google chrome separates its processes into different groups while safari uses one. If you are asking better as in speed/performance, go with Google chrome because it is a lighter load on the RAM.In my opinion, chrome also looks better. It makes sense: in its early days Chrome gained a reputation for being lightweight and fast. It was better than Safari and Firefox, people said. And it was true, at the time. It’s not the case anymore. In fact, I’d argue that you shouldn’t use Chrome on a MacBook if you can avoid it. Advertisement Chrome is, for many people, the first thing installed on a new MacBook. Over the years Chrome became a bloated program that doesn’t integrate well with OS X, and it happened so slowly most Chrome users haven’t noticed. Here are ten reasons every Mac-loving Chrome user should consider switching. Chrome Drains Your MacBook Battery Battery life has been a huge feature for Apple in recent releases of OS X. Mavericks brought energy impact measuring tools to the operating system, which you can find by clicking your battery icon right now. If you’ve got Chrome running, Chrome will show up here. It’s been said a thousand times, but it’s worth saying again: if battery life is important to you, avoid using Chrome. Even on 4-year-old MacBooks, replacing Chrome with Safari can give you an extra hour of battery life in some cases. Google is reportedly working on the issue, and has made progress, but the job is far from finished. And you don’t have to take my word for it: open up the Activity Monitor on your Mac, then head to the “Energy” section. Open some tabs in Chrome and the same ones in another browser – Chrome will almost always use more energy for the same job. It’s particularly true for Netflix, if you want a test case. Your Fans Will Occasionally Sound Like Jet Engines Watching an HD video in Chrome will spin up the fans on this Macbook something crazy. Nice and cool. — Chris Ashby (2pix)?? (@2pixelwide) The low battery life isn’t for no reason: it’s because Chrome uses more CPU power to accomplish the same thing as Safari. Partially this is because of inefficiency, and partially its because Chrome’s priority is speed. Either way, I’ve personally heard way more of my fan while using Chrome than while not. And I’m not alone. It’s kind of nuts that Chrome sets off the fans in my 2015 Macbook Pro when like Final Cut and Adobe Premier don’t — Larry Madill (@larrymadill) 3. Chrome Does Things Its Own Way, Not the Mac Way I ranted about this extensively when I talked about the reasons I hate Chrome, but it’s worth stating again: ChromeOS is the worst thing that ever happened to Chrome on other platforms. Don’t get me wrong, ChromeOS is a great operating system, but the volume of stuff Chrome takes along with it to other platforms makes it a worse browser on the Mac. It simply doesn’t integrate with the OS well. Case in point: notifications. Apple introduced a system-wide notifications system with Mountain Lion way back in 2012. This means notifications all look the same, never overlap each other, and can be browsed all in one archive if you miss something. Chrome could use this system, but doesn’t: it uses a completely separate notification system. These don’t play nicely with other notifications, meaning they’ll cover up those ones. They also don’t show up in the system-wide notification system, so you can’t reference them later there. There are plenty of other differences. Most Mac apps close instantly when you hit CMD-Q; Chrome makes you hold the combo for a while. Most Mac apps have their own preferences window; Chrome uses a website in a tab for that. Whether you like these changes or not, you’ve got to admit Chrome just doesn’t work the way Mac apps do. And if you’re using a Mac, it must at least be in part because you like the way Mac apps work. Chrome Can Slow Down Your Entire Mac I can’t remember the last time a non-technical person asked me why their Mac was slow and it wasn’t a result of dozens of open Chrome tabs. — Anoop Ranganath (@anoopr). It’s a related point, I realize, but it’s worth stating: Chrome uses a lot of CPU power. Part of this is the priority on speed, part of it is inefficient programming, but shut down Chrome on many Macs and everything feels faster. Not just browsing: everything. The Confusing Extension/App/Whatever Ecosystem There’s a folder Chrome put on my computer that looks like this: You might like this feature, but it seems out of place to me. I have some questions for Google: • Why? • No seriously: why? NOTE: This tutorial is now considered outdated and I've published a new instructable with a newer, better and more efficient method to install Mac OS X on your PC, not RUN it! Please refrain from using this tutorial and follow the Even if you're a Windows user, you've probably thought about trying the Mac OS X. Maybe you'd like to test OS X before buying a Mac or building a Hackintosh, or maybe you just want to run an app on your Windows machine which is only exclusive for the Mac OS X. Whatever your reason is, you can actually install and run OS X on any Intel-based Windows PC with a program called VirtualBox. Running OS X on your Windows desktop will take a bit of work, but it's pretty easy to do and the final product is quite outstanding. Thanks to and for providing the original instructions! To cut to the chase, here's how to do this. Before you start the installation process, you’ll want to gather the following: - A PC running 64-bit Windows with at least a dual-core processor and 4GB of RAM. Mountain Lion is 64-bit, and thus requires your copy of Windows to be 64-bit. If you’re on a 32-bit version of Windows, you can install Snow Leopard instead (Google it as this instructable is for Mountain Lion not Snow Leopard). Note that your processor also needs to support VT-x. Should help you find out whether yours does. - and the VirtualBox Extension Pack: VirtualBox is my favourite virtualisation tool for Windows, and it’s completely free. VirtualBox doesn’t officially support OS X, but it’s actually very easy to get up and running. You should download the main program and the Extension Pack, which will give you support for USB devices. - A hacked Mountain Lion disc image. Sadly, this won’t work with a vanilla Mountain Lion installer, so you’ll have to find a compatible hacked version. The hacking group Olarila has put a great installation ISO together, and you can find it by searching Google. If that doesn’t fit well with you, you can head over to the Mac App Store and, so you can at least pirate with a clear conscience. - The and ISO files. Each one has it's own function which you'll know later. However, both will help you boot into the installation. -, which will help you get audio and other things working correctly after installation. You’ll need to register for a free account over at Tonymacx86.com to download this. Old Version of Virtualbox for Mac for Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) (Intel). Oracle Corporation. Latest Version. Make sure to download MultiBeast 4 — it’s labelled “Lion”, but for our purposes the Lion version works better than the Mountain Lion version. Before we install OS X, we’ll need to set up VirtualBox so the OS X install disc can boot correctly. Here’s what you need to do: Step 1: Launch VirtualBox and click the New button. Give your new virtual machine a name (I just called it “Mac OS X”) and set the operating system to “Mac OS X Server (64-bit)”. See the picture of step number one. Step 2: Click Next and choose how much RAM to give your virtual machine. This depends on how much RAM is in your system — you can get away with 2GB, but if you have more, give it more. 4GB of RAM should be a good amount, though I gave mine 4GB, you can set it till 6GB if you have spare. See the picture of step number two. Step 3: Click Next again and choose “Create New Disk”. Create your new disk in VDI format and with dynamically allocated storage. When you’re done, VirtualBox should take you back to the main screen. This step is easy, so it does not need a picture. Step 4: From here, right-click on your OS X machine in the left sidebar and click Settings. Head to the “System” section and uncheck “Enable EFI”. Same as step 3, it's easy, so it does not need a picture. Step 5: Click on the Storage section of the settings and click on the CD icon that says “Empty” under Storage Type. Then, click the CD icon next to the “CD/DVD Drive” dropdown list and select “Choose a Virtual CD/DVD Disk File”. Choose the HackBoot 1 ISO and click OK. See the picture of step number five. Now your virtual machine is ready to boot for the first time. Make sure you have your Mountain Lion ISO ready to go and proceed to the next step. Maybe you had to force-quit an application, or a program refuses to launch, or the spinning beachball of death won’t stop, forcing you to manually power down your Mac. All of those could mean it’s time to do some hard drive and system checks. There are a lot of good commercial utility programs available, but why spend money unless you need to? Here are a handful of very useful programs you might want to install on your Mac or your emergency thumb drive. Disk Utility Starting out with one that ships with every copy of Mac OS X, Disk Utility can do important tasks such as verifying any disk or partition, verifying and repairing disk permissions, and repairing any disk partition except for the one you’ve booted from, which is why we recommend having an emergency hard drive or thumb drive. PseudoAnacron I can’t tell you how long I’ve been installing on every one of my OS X Macs. This is a startup application that checks if the daily, weekly, and monthly cleanup scripts have been run on schedule. The daily script is scheduled to run at 3:15 AM, the weekly at 4:30 AM each Saturday, and the monthly at 5:30 AM on the first day of the month. If your Mac is off at that time, these scripts will not run. In and, these are cron scripts, and they will not run if the computer is off or asleep. In and later, these are launchd scripts, which should run when your Mac wakes from sleep – but they still won’t run it if was powered down. PseudoAnacron launches during system startup. If it discovers that the periodic scripts have run on schedule, the app quits. If they haven’t been run – for instance, if the Mac has been off overnight – it will launch the missed scripts. Version 1.5 is for OS X 10.3; 1.5.1 is for OS X 10.4 Tiger through. PseudoAnacron is the only app I know that will automatically do this at startup. OnyX Titanium Software describes OnyX as a multifunction utility for OS X, and that it is. OnyX is available in ranging from through. OnyX for OS X Leopard (above) looks a bit different from the Snow Leopard version (below), especially the OnyX logo itself. The Mavericks version (below, and reduced more than the above images) is still different, with slightly flatter icons and yet another OnyX logo. One of my favorite OnyX features is the ability to change Dock settings. Easily record, sync, and now edit multiple audio/video streams, capture cool content from the web, and author CDs and DVDs fast! Just maybe I put this in the wrong discussion thread. But all you guys here rock in your answers to my questions. I was trying to burn a.toast file which was to a DVD. While using Toast 10 I had 2:44 left. I was using a Memorex DVD DL; And an error popped up, which stated: The drive reported an error: Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR Sense Code = 0x09, 0x02 FOCUS SERVO FAILURE Any ideas? I would rather use the OSX software to burn the files anyways. If you could let me know how I could convert the.toast file to and.iso (or the mac version of an iso) Thanks. I have had exactly the same error. What I have found is that if I write a dual layer (Verbatim) disk using Toast 10.0.2, it always happens when writing to the internal drive. I tested this on my three Macs (Macbook - 6 weeks old), Macmini 2009 and my iMac (late 2007). If I write the same data to an external USB DVD writer on any of these machines, it is fine. If I write the disk using the internal writer using the Mac OS, the disk writes correctly as well. I only have failures with Toast. The OS is 10.5.7 In conclusion, there is something strange going on with Toast and the internal drives. Having made so many coasters with DL disks which are quite expensive in Australia, I now only use an external drive for DL disks. It is perfectly OK for single layer disks. I have had Toast (v9.0.2) act a bit squirrelly as well. I also don't like the fact that you can't save to a disk image in something other than a.toast file. So, after I've rendered a disk image, I take the resulting.toast file and use Disk Utility to convert it to a DVD/CD Master (drag the file onto Disk Utility, click the Convert button and select DVD/CD Master). I've had better luck burning that to disks from Disk Utility than.toast files from within Toast. Another benefit is, Toast doesn't boot up when you mount a.cdr. Hope that helps.
